ETIAS vs Schengen visa: which do you need?

These two are often confused, but they're for different travellers. Which one you need depends on your nationality — not your destination.

    The simple rule

If your nationality is visa-exempt for short Schengen stays (US, UK, Canada, Australia, Japan and many more), from late 2026 you'll need an ETIAS. If your nationality is visa-required (India, China, Nigeria, and many others), you need a Schengen visa — ETIAS does not apply to you.

    Key differences

ETIAS is online-only, costs €20, is usually approved in minutes, and is valid up to three years for multiple trips. A Schengen visa requires an in-person appointment, supporting documents, biometrics, a higher fee, and is issued by a consulate for specific dates. ETIAS is a light pre-screen; a visa is a full application.

What about long stays or work?

Neither ETIAS nor a short-stay visa covers stays over 90 days, work, or study — those require a national long-stay visa regardless of nationality.

    Not sure which you need?

    Frequently asked questions

Can I use ETIAS instead of a Schengen visa?

Only if your nationality is visa-exempt. Visa-required nationals must get a visa.

Is ETIAS cheaper than a Schengen visa?

Yes — €20 versus a higher consulate visa fee, and it's fully online.

Does ETIAS replace the Schengen visa?

No. It's a separate system for visa-exempt travellers only.
