ETIAS and passport changes

Because an ETIAS is linked electronically to one specific passport, anything that changes your passport can affect your authorisation. Here's what to do if your passport is renewed, lost, stolen, or about to expire.

ETIAS is tied to your passport

When your ETIAS is approved, it is bound to the exact passport you applied with — its number, type, and country of issue. Travel with that same passport, because border systems check the link automatically.

If you get a new passport

A renewed or replacement passport has a new number, so your old ETIAS no longer matches. You will need to apply for a new ETIAS linked to the new passport before you travel, even if the old authorisation hasn't reached its expiry date.

If your passport is lost or stolen

Report it to the authorities and obtain a replacement. The ETIAS attached to the lost passport can no longer be used — once you have your new document, apply for a fresh ETIAS linked to it well ahead of travel.

    Check your expiry date early

Your ETIAS is valid for up to three years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. If your passport expires sooner, your ETIAS ends with it. Renew the passport in good time and reapply so you're never caught out at the airport.

    Frequently asked questions

Do I need a new ETIAS if I renew my passport?

Yes. ETIAS is tied to your passport number, so a new passport needs a new ETIAS.

Can I travel on my old passport to use my ETIAS?

No — always travel on the passport linked to your valid ETIAS. A replaced passport invalidates the link.

What if my passport is lost or stolen?

Get a replacement, then apply for a new ETIAS linked to the new document before travelling.

What happens when my passport expires?

Your ETIAS expires with it. Renew the passport early and reapply for a new ETIAS.
